Birdsong Fall Auction
Birdsong Studios is already starting to look different. As bids get placed on the art featured in the Birdsong Fall online art auction, I take the pieces off the wall and get them wrapped up. It's part of my process that comes to an end on Monday - shipping day.
Bids will close on Sunday at 9 pm MDT. Now, there is a slight exception to this rule. If a bid gets placed on an item in the final minutes, bidding gets extended on that particular item, by 3 minutes. The suggestion that comes from that little fact is DON'T GIVE UP until the item is displayed as SOLD.
There are a total of 63 items in the auction with a number that have attracted a significant number of bids. Two items, a print and an original, are already marked as SOLD as the purchasers chose the BUY NOW option a number of days ago.
There are several outstanding choices that you might consider.
Portals by Heather Thomas 12" x 36" Value: $500 Starting bid price: $250 |
My favourite painting in the auction is not my own. It is "Portals" by Heather. I am a fan of abstract paintings and Heather produces a fair share of creations that draw me in. This is one of them.
Candidate Trump (The Good Ear) 24" x 24" Value: $750 Starting bid price: $375 |
I did this portrait of Mr. Trump several weeks before the first assassination attempt when he emerged bloodied but emboldened. A bullet or shrapnel pierced the top of his left ear. Originally titled "Candidate Trump", the painting has an alternate name now: "The Good Ear". If you exist on the left side of the political spectrum, you might have a negative reaction to my choice of subject. However, you might be surprised to discover that more than several visitors to Birdsong Studios lean strongly in the opposite direction.
Gordon (or what you will) 24" x 24" Value: $750 Starting bid price: $375 |
Back in the late 1960s and early 1970s, many of us had this tri-coloured rubber ball in our toy boxes. It was as omnipresent as the Slinky, Lego sets and Etch a Sketch. As fans saw pictures of this original painting they commented that stimulated the senses. "I can smell it," shared one. "I totally remember what it felt like as it started to crack and pieces fell off," said another. I remember what it felt like when my brothers dinged me with it. Ouch! I named it Gordon in honour of Barenaked Ladies who had an album of the same name that featured this ball on the cover.
Not just another post 16" x 24" Value: $600 Starting bid price: $250 |
We spent a full month on my sister and brother-in-law's "farm" near Sexsmith last summer while we were between homes. I write "farm" with quotation marks because it is not a farm in the traditional sense. It's more of a large forested acreage. But to me...it's the farm. I would go for walks in the forest every day with my camera in tow. These old fence posts suggested to me that at one time, the property was a real farm, and that while they blend into the trees and shrubs, they probably have a story to tell.
There are two art puzzle packages in the Birdsong Fall auction, both deceptively good deals. You see, in each of the 1000 piece puzzles included in these sets are $50 coupons to be used in the purchase of original paintings on our web shop or in person at Birdsong Studios. So, not only do you get two high quality art puzzles, you get a cash credit that you can use between now and December 31, 2025.
Stampede Spirit 18" x 36" Value: $800 Starting bid price: $100 |
Brenda and Rick from Centered on Wellness invited me to do a live painting at their first annual Stampede Breakfast here in High River in July. I wanted to do a painting that celebrated the spirit of the greatest outdoor show on earth and do it in support of the chosen recipient charity: Wild Rose Community Connections.
I found this on their website about the organization: Wild Rose Community Connections was founded on the principle that together we could enrich the lives of individuals, children and families. There are endless opportunities to touch a life in a meaningful way, but we have chosen to focus on programs with the greatest impact. Our values guide every aspect of our business from who we partner with, to how we interact with the communities that we operate in. We are passionate about doing good and hope to attract others who feel the same way to grow our efforts.
Proceeds from the sale of "Stampede Spirit" featuring chuckwagon driver Obrey Motowylo will be donated to Wild Rose Community Connections.

If you've read this far, I'll share with you a painting that I've been working on this week that won't be in the auction...at least, not this one. This is a painting of Edmonton Oilers great Grant Fuhr. He'll be in Calgary this coming week for the Battle of Alberta event at the BMO Centre on the Stampede Grounds. He will sign this painting and it will be auctioned off by one of the best auctioneers in the business. I'll be doing a live painting of Mike Vernon at the event that expected to have almost 1000 guests in attendance.
