I'm melting
While we were being pummelled with rain and cool weather in June, the weather forecasters were saying we were heading into a hotter than normal summer. The last few weeks have proven that to be true.
Our SEED Home, protected from the sun from an array of trees in the neighbourhood, does pretty well on the hot days. However, on the super hot days (30 and above) it has edged up to 28 or 29 degrees before things start to cool off outside. On the other hand, the studio building is completely exposed to the sun for most of the day. Even with a portable A/C unit provided by the builder while we wait for the HVAC system to be completed, working becomes untenable by about 3 pm.
Heather and I spent the last couple of days putting together 18 feet of IKEA cabinets that sit underneath the north facing windows. In these cupboards and drawers will go many of the bits and bobs of our art business. While it doesn't feel like I've made a dent, I managed to find places for 5 or 6 boxes of envelopes, books, art cards, matted prints and puzzles. I'll do more tomorrow when it is cooler.
Shawn and his partner from SOBO plumbing and heating with support from Jeff and Ari from Bold Electric successfully got the air conditioning working on our house late this afternoon. Set at 24 degrees, it feels heavenly in here - totally comfortable. I'm no longer melting.
I find it harder to paint when the studio is in disarray. We had to move boxes around several times to make room for the IKEA cupboards. Even in this chaos I managed to complete a new tree painting called "Aspen Sundown". Tomorrow I hope to work on a couple of commissions that have been patiently waiting for things to settle in the studio.
Each box unpacked, each construction milestone achieved, each task completed is a step forward, a step closer to full completion. The the IKEA cupboards put together, AC operating in the house, and the HVAC nearing completion for the studio, it felt like a big day of progress.
