Slip slidin' away

Summer is such an interesting time. The cares and worries of the frenetic nature of fall, winter and spring slip away. Or do they?

Yes, there is a sense of chill on hot summer days and nights. Yes, there is an inclination to let go and enjoy the wonders of the season.  Yes, there is an impact that you need to watch out for.

I had been doing really great with managing and maintaining my ideal weight for several months. However, with the warmer weather I have a harder time getting to sleep at night and my habit is to get up and snack when that happens.  And it happens several times a night.

What also happens is an avoidance of weighing in, something I had been doing religiously first thing in the morning for the better part of six months.

"What gets measured gets done," a former boss used to say.  That daily weigh-in is less about the number and more about psychologically reminding me to look after myself. I stepped on the scale for the first time in four days and found myself above 170 pounds for the first time in a very long time. I'm not panicking or feeling bad. Rather I'm motivated to quickly get back on track and make a mental note of why it happened.

There is no question that my Achilles heel is snacking in the evening. My brain has fooled me into thinking that if I snack I'll be able to sleep.  The inevitable result is that no matter how awesome I eat during the day, I am going to put on weight. Simple as that. I need to try some different strategies to help with my sleep.

In recent weeks I find myself slipping downstairs, sitting at the dining table and watching videos on Youtube while snacking on something. Maybe I need to shift from watching a screen to reading a book. Maybe I need to stay away from the table and relocate to a different spot.

It is so easy to slip back into bad habits. If you find yourself slip slidin' away during these lazy hazy days of summer maybe the time to reset is now.  It may seem counterintuitive, but maybe this is the season to either discover or rediscover the power of the Ideal Protein program. Heather and I are ready to help. I actually returned to Ideal Protein last summer.  It proved to be a great time for me as it gave me some structure to avoid the many dietary pitfalls that summer serves up.

Our Ideal Protein clinic is located on historic Elma Street in downtown Okotoks. You'll enjoy visiting our little office and talking with us about how to stop the slipping and sliding down the weight gain path and start moving in a healthier direction.
