Imagine if you will....
Imagine that your young family slept on planks of wood....
...with flimsy walls and no doors
...at night you are at the mercy of all the tiny flying critters that come out when the sun goes down
...you have no power except what you can eek out of a couple of tiny batteries pulled out of a broken down scooter
...water comes from a well out in the field, one bucket at a time
...you work hard fishing at the big lake every day, but it's barely enough to feed your own family, let alone generate an income
You would think that conditions like this would make life unbearable and would create personalities that would be hard, beaten and sullen.
Nothing could be further from the truth. Tea and Mapp's family was bright, optimistic, hard-working and determined. It was a privilege to spend a few days with them as their home was constructed thanks to the efforts of Bracelets For Buildings back in February.
As I look back on that time and look forward to meeting a new recipient family in 2020, I'm trying to decide which moment to paint. They all capture a portion of the story of this beautiful family.
Someone suggested that I should paint all of them. However, the time that I have is rather limited, so I have to chose.
With lots of suggestions from people I will make my choice and do a live painting as part of the Best Western Sawridge Plus Sawridge Suites in Fort McMurray next Wednesday. They are hosting a lunch with all proceeds going toward building a home or two with Bracelets For Buildings in Cambodia. The painting will be sold in a future online auction and the proceeds will also get donated to the cause. You can just show up for lunch that day, or you can book your seat in advance by clicking here.
As a small thank you for your presence, we will be doing a free draw for a gallery canvas EP of the painting that I did at last year's fundraiser called "Monk's Hands". I hope you will join us.
