Party at the Plaza
This would normally be the first day of the interPLAY Festival, Fort McMurray's former signature festival that ran from 1990 to 2013. For many years, this was my "Meltdown Day", when anxiety and exhaustion would kick-in and I would need to curl up in bed and wait for it to pass. I've been so focused on the Games that I didn't think about interPLAY until this morning. Weird. It is usually just below the surface of my mind at this time of year.
The 2015 Western Canada Summer Games get rolling today with the Opening Ceremonies at Shell Place. I'm really looking forward to watching our local performers put on an amazing show. Throughout the Games though, a free community party is happening at Jubilee Plaza, the site of many interPLAY memories from the past.
PARTY AT THE PLAZA runs on six different evenings during these 10 magical days. Our community will be humming with athletes, coaches, officials, volunteers and visitors. Some estimates have pegged the total number of expected guests well above the 10,000 mark. Jubilee Plaza provides a perfect central meeting place, and a spot where locals can engage with out-of-towners.
Here is the schedule:
Saturday, August 8, 6 - 9 pm | A NIGHT OF LIVE MUSIC
This is going to be an amazing evening of great tunes featuring The Veins, Steven Bowers, and the Sentimental Gentlemen.
Sunday, August 9, 7 - 9 pm | BEVERLEY LAMBERT - PROUD TO BE METIS
Metis entertainer and educator Beverly Lambert will be sharing songs, jigging and storytelling.
Tuesday, August 11, 7 - 9 pm | REFLECTIONS
The Athabasca Tribal Council presents an evening of First Nations art, history and culture.
Thursday, August 13, 7 - 9 pm | A CELEBRATION OF FORT MCMURRAY FILM
The film scene in our community has exploded in recent years. This is a chance to see some of the results and enjoy a sport-themed Hollywood feature.
Friday, August 14, 6:30 - 9 pm | A NIGHT OF LIVE, LOCAL MUSIC
The best of the Wood Buffalo music scene will light up the night featuring Danny Tulk, Stu Marchand and the Mychela Band.
Saturday, August 15, 6 - 9 pm | DANCE WOOD BUFFALO
The Multicultural Association of Wood Buffalo presents a grand cultural showcase of dance.
This is a great opportunity to enjoy a free celebration of talent that we have in our community. Jubilee Plaza has been re-imagined and rebuilt, providing a much-needed civic square. Come and see for yourself during the 2015 Western Canada Summer Games.
