Mining memories

I found myself on two mining expeditions into my various boxes of memories, photographs and assorted fragments of a life well-lived this week.  First, I went looking for a script of The Odd Couple, which I was convinced I had, buried somewhere since I directed the show back in 1993 or 1994 with Gilbert and Sullivan in Stettler.

After scanning every shelf and coming up empty, I began excavating deeper, into old file folders and dusty boxes.  Still nothing.

I checked the Fort McMurray Public Library online database to see if it was there, but no such luck. I broke down, brought up Amazon on the computer, and ordered a new copy.  I just have to read it again, for reasons that will become clear in a few days.

The next dive into the depths of the thousands of bits and pieces that collectively illustrate our story was inspired by the passing of poet Dr. Maya Angelou.  About 17 years ago I had painted a big portrait of this amazing woman, incorporating collage to help punch it up.  Given away years ago, I knew I had a photograph of the piece somewhere.

Pictures are scattered in every room in multiple nooks, crannies, boxes and envelopes.  And as Murphy's Law dictates, it came down to a box at the very bottom of another box before I found what I was looking for.

Approximately 5' x 5', this painting, which I have not seen in person for a very long time. captures the beauty, brilliance, serenity and soul of this amazing woman.  Unfortunately, there is a glare in the photo which makes the words hard to see.  Here is what it says:
You may shoot me with your words, you may cut me with your eyes, you may kill me with your hatefullness, but still, like air, I'll rise!
RIP Dr. Maya Angelou, 1928 - 2014
